Pearlies

What are pearlies? Its a word that either refers to pearl like beads or objects with a translucent pearl finish. Mop (Mother of pearl), Shell buttons, painted conches all fall into this category. As trims, as accessories or as embellishments Pearls and MOP have always been a part of classic wardrobe. 2010 has seen as major comeback of this classic trend of wearing pearlies. When the west is going gaga over it why should the east be far behind?

A recent article in firemountain gems reflects on how pearls are gaining huge momentum (over rubies and diamonds) and this scenario is not limited to white pearls alone. Coloured pearls (naturally coloured, dyed, dipped, sprayed, tainted), shaped (faceted) pearls and even dyed MOP are all part of the jewellery trend for FW 2010. Featured here are some pieces from my pearlies collection.

MOP flat beads

MOP beads shown here are flat or coin shapes. These mother of pearl beads are cut from natural shells (of mollusks). They maybe then dipped in a solution containing an iridescent mother of pearl powder along with coloring agents and binders. Afterwards, holes are drilled and they are polished. In case of round – spherical beads, the process will be different beginning with ground MOP powder.
