Hindol Raga – of spring

Hindol Raga

When January is here can spring be far behind? After spending a cold winter I think that you all would be eagerly looking forward to warmer weather. Talking of Spring reminds me that I am yet to post the neck pieces I based on Ragas that stand for spring and summer. So Here are the Pieces from my Ragamala collection that were inspired by the Hindol Raga Family – the Raga of Spring

Specification
Parent Raga: Hindol raga
Wives: Telangi, Devkari, Basanti, Sindhoori, Ahiri. Sons: Surmanand, Bhasker, Chandra-Bimb, Mangalan, Ban, Binoda, Basant, Kamoda.

Hindol Raga is an exceptional Late night raga, with four notes in the arohana, and five in the avarohana; Carnatic equivalent -Sunada Vinodini; here are two necklaces based on the Raga, where I have used the same image – one zoomed out, the other zoomed in, in the same color combination but captured 2 very different moods and feelings. In the painting, Hindol is portrayed as a King (Raja) along with his queen ( Ragini Telangini)Hindol Raga

Hindol Raga cord necklace – Image of raga hindol and Ragini Telangi on a swing set in resin in an antique brass pendant, wire wrapped to a kemp rakodi which suspends from a green handmade silk cord.

Hindol Raga necklace

Hindol Raga glass necklace – Glass pendant of raga hindol and Ragini Telangi on a swing asymmetrically wire wrapped to a strand of red and green wooden, acrylic and glass beads.Donote the creative wire wrapping I have tried to keep the rectangular glass tile in place. I initially wanted to add an dangler in the bottom loop but later decided against it as it looked too complicated.

The following three have mini painting reproductions of the Raginis of the Hindol family

sindhoori – A mixed metal necklace – painting of Ragini and her maidens on a terrace in a 32g copper handcut sheet with rhinestone border and bead danglers and is wire wrapped to a handmade orange silk cord.

Basanthi Necklace – Basanthi Ragini is the wife of Hindol Raga and this raga is sung during the basant ritu (spring) Carnatic equivalent -vasantha. This is a double half and half necklace in blue, amber and chrome yellow –  one half is beads and the other is chain, apart from having 2 different colored beads on either side – thereby double half and half pattern

Ahiri Necklace – Ahiri Ragini is the wife of Hindol Raga and this raga is sung during mid mornings with the mod being sombre. The necklace is made up of blue, red and silver beads in glass, acrylic and wire along with a couple of handmade lampwork beads

So how did you like these pieces? I know that the colors used dont really say “Spring” in the western context, but if you consider the Indian celebrations in Jan, Feb and March like Sankranti, Holi and even valentines day, then the colors sort of make sense. I think of Spring as a “Happy time’  and personally I feel that rich colors signify happiness more than pastels. what do you think?

It looks like the exhilaration with winter ends with Christmas 🙂 Just a joke, winter has its own beauty but color is essential in out lives. This is such a beautiful collection! I love the wire wrapping in the Hindol Raga cord necklace and all the touches of asymmetry!

Thanks You. I guess cultural diversity is a great thing – I somehow cannot equate dec-jan to white cause I have never really seen snow and I usually great blobs of deep and midtone colors here during that time. But I would like to experience a white Christmas too sometime and see how that is

Thanks Radhika, I made it with resin, metal and silk – a true mixed media piece from the collection. It had lots of challenges but it was also exciting

Haaa….the whole collection evolved from my love for stories and color – I am crazy about them
