Jewelry Stringing Winter 2017 Feature

For the past three years I have been actively trying to get my work published. Though I have failed many times, I have also succeeded a few times. It is a very long drawn out process full of self criticism and constant evolution, something that I spoke about in my evolution of a necklace design post. Nevertheless, it can be very gratifying to see your work in print. After trying for many years, this year I have my jewelry featured in both the Jewelry Stringing Summer 2016 and Jewelry Stringing Winter 2017. The latter being the swan song of the magazine stirs up strange emotions in me, as this is the first time I have been published in this particular magazine’s winter issue.

The scent of Pine Necklace

I had sent in three necklace designs for three separate themes – Winter woodland, Earth form and Ethereal out of which one was selected. The scent of Pine Necklace that I sent in, is a 20 inch necklace (excl pendant drop) that has been published in the Winter Woodland category. I made a looped (wire wrapped) beaded necklace with glass, shell and wooden beads in beige, brown and green. It is illustrative of my imaginary walk to a earthy cabin through a pine forest that is sprinkled with snow.

Materials

Beaded projects are often about the beads used. In that regard, this necklace is quite unique and special. I started making this necklace based on the two oblong glass beads that I bought right out my house from gypsies during a temple festival (they were earrings in their previous avatar). One of them is an oval (puffed) and the other is a twisted flat oval bead. The beige beads are from another gypsy as well. The MOP coins are from Bangkok and the wood beads are from Indonesia, sent by Lilik Kristiani during a bead soup blog hop.

The green Football beads and the frosted foil beads are from Beadsnfashion a large bead website in India. In the beginning of 2016 I ( after a lot of frustration) decided that I won’t make jewelry anymore, maybe just for the blog to to teach. When I was ordering beads for my students, I came across the above mentioned beads along with many more beads (Duh!!) and it reminded me why and how I fell in love with jewelry making in the first place. Last but not the least the pendant is a ceramic art bead made by my friend Lori Schenider.

Doesn’t that make this necklace truly international and eclectic? Here is the full material list (not published in the Jewelry Stringing Winter 2017 magazine)

Material List

  • 1 brown 26mm ceramic round pendant
  • 10 beige and white 10mm round glass beads
  • 2 brown 12mm round wood beads
  • 1 tan 40mm twisted flat oval glass bead
  • 1 dark brown 45mm oval glass bead
  • 4 Green 10mm silver foil sugar beads
  • 6 green 8mm faceted glass beads
  • 4 cream 12mm coin shell/crystal pearls
  • 1 pewter 36mm leaf toggle antique copper plated
  • 4 gold tone 5mm jump rings
  • 20 gauge Antique brass wire

Even though that I am very sad that Interweave has decided to close two of its four jewelry magazines, I hope that they’ll concentrate on making Beadwork a consolidated magazine. They would be able to focus on their photography and layouts to match industry standards. I sincerely hope that they continue to publish projects apart from beadweaving that will cater to a wider audience. And, I do wish that I’ll get to write for them, once again.

I hope you found it interesting
Cheers

Congratulations Divya, it’s beautiful. Such a shame the magazine is folding. Art Jewelry magazine folded earlier this year too which I used to get. I really wish a UK publisher would create a metalwork jewellery magazine as there are a lot of us who would snap it up 😀

Thanks Tracy. Oh, is that the case? I didnt know that Art Jewelry had wrapped up too. I guess not many people are interested in buying a print magazine.

Congratulations! Your necklace is very inspiring! Just beautiful. I am disappointed too that the magazine is folding. I had bracelets in the last few magazines but tried, unsuccessfully, to have necklaces published. It is exciting to see your name in print. Keep trying. I think self-doubt is part of being an artist and you truly have talent!
