My Modahaus experience

Sometime back I won a Giveaway hosted by Pearl of the Beadinggem’s Journal and I was super excited, coz it was the Modahaus table top studio. I was thrilled when I received it super fast, within that week thanks to express Shipping by Lex. Ever Since I have been using it to take pictures and so  I thought that I will share my experience of using M with you all.

The set I won is a ModahausTabletop Studio Pro TS216  which is a versatile mini photo studio kit. It came flat packed in a Smartcase and included a backdrop support, translucent white, opaque white and 4 translucent coloured backdrops.
Even though it came with an assembly card I referred to this guide to set it up and learnt quite a bit about using the product. It seems we can use the smart case to create a light tunnel too!! But I havent tried it so far. Initially I was so excited by the color sheets and I tried them, but now I stick to white. Here are some pics taken using the set in direct natural light, reflected natural light, flash and tubelight (fluorescent). Pics from my recent Alambre (Wire jewelry) and festive collections
Above – white opaque+ clear+ orange+ pink sheets
Above – gray – all sheets together (color theory – all colors as pigments when combined give black). Below – Only White background (indirect light + flash using a technique thought by my photography professor in college)
Plus:
– The flat pack is really easy to store, use and carry around (I shoot my pics in the terrace)
– You don’t need a dedicated studio or place to keep your photo set up
– The color options eliminate the need to carry around different backgrounds and props and for me thats a huge plus. As necklaces could be hung from the slots, even neck forms arent necessary. ( I used to use a tile, sheet on handmade paper, a neck form & a cement surface before)
– seamless curve – great for long chains & necklaces
– Easy to clean(unlike a neck form), doesnt get soiled or crushed. Super light too!!
– Ability to create a light tunnel & Can be used well with lights ( I havent tried it yet)
– The white sheet is really  white and uniform, so you get great pinks, purples & light greens in your picture without any effort.
– Love the fact that Lex answers to all your queries about the product even if they are really silly
Minus:  There isnt any minus exactly but I do face some problems & I also have some suggestions on how the product could  be made better (sorry superb or superbest if I could coin such a word)
– After a few times of set up and packing, the stand doesnt really stay upright (I am afraid to crease the sides further) and when I use just one sheet it just slips down. So I end up putting multiple sheets (color behind the opaque white) just for a better hold-
**Answer from Lex – Use the locking tab at the bottom to hold up the sheet. Viola Problem solved!!
– Its too light and since I shoot on the terrace I have a tough time keeping it from being blown away by the  wind..lol 😉
– The knob for hanging necklaces is broad so it doesnt fit regular jump rings, so its difficult to hand a necklace with rings
– I also wish it could be longer/wider because when you lay a mid sized/big piece flat instead of hanging, it tends to slips because of the curve – the solution is to remove the curve and lay the background flat
Suggestions:
–  I love shooting on natural, texture filled backgrounds and feel that it adds a charm to a handmade product, and sometimes a uniform color acrylic sheet makes the piece look mass manufactured as thats what they use on all these hundred thousand retail websites. So I wish M had a textured background
– I really really wish that there was a best black sheet in the set. Its very difficult to get a smooth, even black background, but when you have one and shoot on it, your pieces look more beautiful than they do on white.

Final Verdict!! Its Great!! and if you are think of setting up a light box or a photo spot on your own using DIY methods, I think that you would greatly benefit from this product even though it might cost you a little more than your DIY set up.
But dont expect super professional photos just because you use a good product. At the end of the day, the quality of the photograph depends upon the light and the ability of the photographer to capture that light beautifully.

I hope you found this post interesting

Cheers
