As Beautiful as my work, as beautiful as me – Mia

All of you know me as a blogger, a jewelry designer and a few of you as a friend. But there is one important facet of me that hardly gets represented here – that of a teacher. I spend most of my days teaching fashion design to various undergrad, diploma and postgrad students at design institutes in Chennai. I also coach school kids  to help them with entrance exams to design schools and take jewelry making and craft classes at home – so yes teaching is a big part of my life and I love it!! Nothing better than being in touch with the subject, surrounded by young minds all the time. It is very frustrating at times, but the satisfaction you get from inspiring and shaping somebody’s life is enormous.

Ofcourse I do love being a designer, particularly a jewelry designer. I can’t imagine my life without beads, stones, wires and pliers and the Technicolor dreams I have of jewelry 😀  It literally drives my sickness and pain away and I owe all my fame and recognition to this craft. As I talk about design all the time, people think that my life seems like more work than play; but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Just as my work defines me, I think that I define my work- it is my form of self expression, just as Megha does in the new Tanishq Mia TVC.  Light and unflashy the Mia collection of jewelry complements Megha’s style and confidence allowing her to be exactly herself.

When I read the tagline of this campaign – Mia Woman, I thought wow! are they talking about me? When people meet me and see the way I talk and present myself, they assume that I must be in a high roller corporate job and when they hear that I am a designer who did quit her corporate job once and now teaches, they are frankly surprised. ‘Why don’t you want to earn more money, they ask; why don’t you sell your jewelry designs to a retail chain who can mass produce them? Why do you have to handcraft all your designs? Why, Why, Why? My answer is simple, I do what I believe in and I believe in myself.
When you are sick all the time people don’t expect you to make much of yourself, so when my students say that I inspire them to achieve greater heights and my family acknowledges all my hardwork and dedication in trying to build a brand I feel high and thrilled. It is my work that gives me confidence to be just the way I want to be – As beautiful as my work, As beautiful as me!!
Yes, I juggle, I struggle, I am ambitious and I am gorgeous!! I am a Mia Woman!
