Lets Meet – Designer Abhisek from Absynthe Designs

If you are someone who loves science-fiction and gadgets, yet Romantic by nature, you would love Steampunk. The first time I laid eyes on Steampunk jewelry in a beading daily newsletter I fell in love with it, but somehow I never got around to making it and I have never really seen it in India. So When I chanced upon Abhisek’s work, it was like stepping foot in 19th century Victorian London lost amidst brass fittings, clock faces and steel roses. Thus his work became the automatic choice for first feature of this new segment – Lets Meet
Steampunk gets its name from a time when steam power was used to, typically run everything and combines the romance and beauty with science discovery and new technology. Let us understand more about it, in a tete-a-tete with Abhisek Basak…

Tell us a little about yourself and what made you start your brand

I am a fashion design graduate from NIFT, Hyderabad. Worked and lived in many places. Absynthe started as a hobby project. I wanted to push my creative limits, explore, experiment and to have fun. And it just kept growing. My work is catharsis for me. It is a reflection of every emotion, every desire and every feeling that I have inside me.

Oh I can totally relate to you, as I myself am a Fashion design grad from NIFT who shifted into jewelry. But I am Curious as to how and why you chose Steampunk? I personally love the style, but is it accepted in India?

My love for watches, mechanics and fluid aesthetics automatically resulted in Steampunk. I did not choose steampunk, steampunk chose me. It aint too known or seen in India, hence only the fashion forward demography is going for it. The style mavericks are loving it but it’s long long way from the popularity it deserves.

Tell us about your product range consist of and what goes into making each collection special

Jewelry, gadgets, USB drives, lights, stationery, fashion. object d’ arts..whatever you can imagine. The design process is very fluid and organic. Designs and materials mate, ideas incubate and forms into the product. I am a puritan and stay as authentic to the genre, style and vision as is possible. Each of my pieces tell a story; they will speak to you and make you talk back to them.

On a personal note, what is your style?
Style is anything that you can carry with elan and confidence. and you need to keep reinventing yourself and your style. Any style, if not changed, becomes stale and hence, defeats it’s purpose.

I understand how difficult it is for a designer to choose favorites from his work, but I were to ask you to choose a few pieces of your work that you are most passionate about, what would they be?
It’s very difficult to choose favorite pieces but most popular pieces are Time stays we go, The crescent moon, The Last key and Dragontail
