Blue gold Mixed Media jewelry

fabric and fibre jewlery

Every collection that I create, regardless of the technique or the primary material that it is based on, will have mixed media pieces. The Blue gold collection isn’t any different. The idea behind Blue gold Mixed Media jewelry is to add unique surprising elements, textures and techniques to the otherwise homogeneous collection. In these four pieces, I have explored yarn, metal, palm leaf and ofcourse resin.

Tassel Necklace

The Cultural roots of Indigo run deep in many Religions. The Tzittzit of Jews is one such important religious and cultural connection to Indigo.  Talmud or the discussion of the Rabbis talks about a blue cord Tzittzit with white fringe that must be worn by all Jews to help them know when to start their morning prayers. Though the Tzittzit looks very different in form and usability, I was inspired by the story to create an ombre tassel necklace. It is variation of my boho tassel necklace and is looped together with Blue pottery beads (ceramic) and coated crystals. Earrings on demand.

Palm Leaf Jewelry set

This set comprises of three very different materials – dori (made of cotton cord), Palam leaf pendant and beads and acrylic spacers. I have been wanting to attempt palm leaf jewelry for a while now. So when a group of palm leaf basket making artisans visited my institute in late February, I got disc pendants made by them. But they couldn’t make matching beads. My attempts to source them from other places ended in vain. That was until I found some earrings at a local store that could be harvested for palm leaf beads. Viola! this set happened. It felt so good to work with completely handmade artisanal eco-friendly components. I love how the necklace has both the red indigo and green indigo in the beads alone bright pops of red. However, both the reds of the pendant and earrings are different since they are from different sources.

Chakra necklace

Pranic healing and Reiki believe in the presence of 7 energy chakras in the human body which regulate our life force. Blockage at even one chakra can mean pain and suffering. This can often be cleared unblocking or releasing the pent up energy by converting it to an another form. Each of the chakras has a corresponding color that follows the colors of the rainbow. However, they are not permanent but changing constantly according to our moods and feelings.

Inspired by the energy Chakras and their colors, this Chakra Silk cord necklace combines the positivity and awakening brought about by the Indigo chakra and the expression of truth and love conveyed by the blue chakra. Made of brass metal pendant, silk thread, crystals and lampwork beads, this truly is piece that is full of promise and positivity. The silk thread necklace is black in colour and is wrapped with small blue crystals. I have painted the pendant with patina inks in the light and shade (Chiaroscuro style) usually found in oil paintings.

Indigo block  print and copper dome necklace

I came across a lovely collection of block printed paper bits recently and wanted to use them in my collection. I picked one bit which had mustard, red and indigo in it with a print that looked like either Bagh or Dabu.  Both Bagh and dabu are traditional block printing techniques of India. Though both are very different in terms of techniques, recent interventions have made the patterns very similar. Consequently it is difficult to distinguish the prints, not just from each other but from other block printing techniques too if seen only as an image (i.e without the original fabric).

I encased the print on a paper base and covered with UV resin, which I am yet to master. I picked beads in the colors of the print and looped them wit ha brass chain to form an asymmetrical necklace. Finally I added the copper form folded and domed dangle which has been colored with resin tint.

With that I come to the end of this collection for now. I might add more to it depending on the requests that I get. Please tell me in the comments what you feel about this entire collection and what I could do to make it better. Also share your ideas on the kind of pieces that you would like to see from me in the future.

Love the last piece Divya – asymmetry is difficult to achieve but you have got it down to a T and it is very pleasing to the eye

Thanks Neena, that seemingly harmless piece took quite a bit of time to envision…LOL

I find it hard to choose a favorite piece in this post. First, I loved the ombre tassels. Then I loved the palm leaf elements and the colors in this necklace are my most favorite of all! Then, the Chakra necklace has some beautiful blue hues and an intriguing “double”bail and finally, the pop of mustard, the asymmetry and the artful pendant – all are beautiful. And like I said before (I think), you have managed to make an array of different style jewelry based just on Indigo!

Thanks Rozantia. so kind of you to note all the details. I did spend quite a lot of time on this seemingly small colelction. I wanted to challenge myself to create as many variations as possible within the theme

Though I am biased to the palm leaf jewellery as I am addicted to rich, vibrant, colorful jewellery, It was difficult to pick one! I am sure all the colors would suit Indian skin tone 🙂 The ombre necklace is perfect for summer white kurti’s! The Indigo block print and copper dome necklace resembles Aintumukak Kuthu Vilakku (or more faces :)) Once again, beautiful collection

Interesting Analogy Praveena, I would never thought of the kuthuvilaku by myself. I love rich deep colors too and hence they find a place in every collection of mine

I’m a sucker for mixed media pieces. I love the idea of your collections and anything with blue works for me. I’m smitten with anything blue. These are all such cool pieces, but that tassel one catches my eye the most. Beautiful job all around!

Thanks Hope. I think mixed media is where the real explorations lie. They might not be as durable as uni-media pieces but they more than make up for it in style and uniqueness

I love the tassel necklace, the ombre is so beautiful in this design. The dome neckl;ace is my other fave, what a great balance and bold statement. Three cheers for your whole blue-gold collection!

Thanks Michelle. One perk of teaching elements and principles of design every semester is that it reminds me to maintain balance and rhythm in my designs. But due to such control in the design stage I take a lot of time to design and end up making very few pieces
