Celebrating Madras week with Patinam

patinam by Sayuri

Today is the 378th Madras Day and I am celebrating with jewelry. I am so excited to showcase the launch of my new FW17-18 Collection “Patinamthat is inspired by Chennai or Madras as it was once known. I have worked really hard on it and I hope you would find it interesting.

Patinam

Pattanam or Pattinam means City; it refers to Chennai city and is the short form of Chennapattinam. It is the city that modernises people by blending together different ideas, beliefs and traditions.

Patinam collection of Jewelry

Patinam is a collection of handmade jewellery by Sayuri that is inspired by the sights, sounds, culture, and the people of Chennai. It is Chennai as seen through the eyes of a student who moves to the city and is enamoured by both its past and present. It is an attempt to look holistically at the city which is a potpourri of various cultures through the medium that is jewellery.

Materials and Forms

The collection combines Kemp components, palm leaf beads, glass beads, embroidered ribbons, and yards of silk and cotton. The real Madras handkerchief checks and Chintz of the Coromandel coast come alive as hand painted metal necklaces.  Restored prints and illustrations of the Chennapatnam fort, the Marundeeshwar temple, the Chepauk Palace, the Mylapore temple, Sir Thomas Monroe, and Rukmini Devi Arundale find an important place in the collection. Made up of necklaces, bangles, and earrings, this mixed media collection attempts to portray the resplendence of Chennai in the form of wearable art.

Happy Madras Day to you too – and good luck with the exhibition and presentation. I remember Madras very fondly as we made many trips there when I was a girl – we used to always go to Victoria Technical Institute on Mount Road and buy loads of stuff, go to the Elphinstone cinema, mango milk shake at Jaffars and falooda at Buharis – I wonder if those places exist anymore – I bet they don’t, sadly.

Thank you. VTI still exists, Buharis is a thriving chain (though I didn’t know that it was famous for Falooda) but I have no clue where Elphinstone cinemas or Jaffars is – maybe Parrys?
