We have to keep track of new jewelry trends, even though I rarely design anything just because it’s hot this season. But I sometimes take custom orders based on a current trend and so have to be informed. I love it when statement and quirky are in fashion because it’s close to what I make. Plus, I never make jewelry that I feel uncomfortable to wear, e.g. chokers or slave bracelets, unless it’s a custom order.

I always try to stay ahead of the trends so my work always looks experimental and new. But it also depends on your client segment. Up until 2-3 years my clients were mostly 50+ in terms of age so I could get away from trends. Now that my clients are much younger – 30+ I see that it is imperative I heed fashion trends

I prefer classic jewellery than following trends both for myself and the jewellery I make – although what one sees people wearing all the time does have an impact on the subconscious when a design evolves

Designers, in my opinion, are of two types. a. those who stick to a particular style and b. those who change according to the trends to suit the changing market. Both are right – it depends on the route that we want to follow
