Springtime jewellery

sringtime iced enamel earrings

Spring is here or atleast the Spring Equinox is here in the Northern Hemisphere. Well, Google says so with its animated Hedgehog (which is all the rage now). But Google also knows through reported temperature that Spring is long gone in Chennai and Summer is inching its way in. But sarcasm aside, I have been enjoying the lush green of grass and blooming flowers for the last few weeks but walking through the more outdoor part of college to get from the gate to my department and back in the evenings. My daily routine includes smiling at the Arali flowers (Oleander)Β in the morning and mewling at the kitties sunning in the evenings. Ofcourse, it has inspired me to create and here two pieces of Springtime jewellery.

Springtime Jewellery

If I were to breakdown springtime as elements of design, this is how I would do it. The jewellery that you see here are based on this breakdown.

  • Colours – greens, sky blue, pink, golden yellow and silver.
  • Shapes/forms – floral, ornate, circular/spherical, foliate.
  • Semantic visual would be matt with a hint of gleam and textural surfaces.

greenman bracelet

Green man Bracelet

After what seems likes ages, I made 2 bracelets recently. I call this bracelet the Green man bracelet as the focal (bought at Michaels in 2016) reminds me for the Green man’s face. I did this one as a class demo and I could talk about measurements, weight of beads and crimping using this design. All but one of my jewellery design students have come for their offline practical module. Hence, I am figuring out how to teach in a hybrid mode. Its tough, to say the least and I am constantly looking for easy designs to illustrate techniques. On the plus side, I will have more jewellery to show you now.

Spring time Earrings

I create my springtime earrings, inspired by the first photo of this post. I wanted to do an abstract representation of pink flowers in a bed of blue-greens. It is once again from a class demo, this time for Iced enamelling. The Earrings are originally, silver tone and are covered with patina inks and a dab of gold paint. The center alone is coated with resin. The earrings are about 2+ inches long with a loop at the bottom to add a dangle or a bead. However, I like it as is and plan to keep it that way.

decoupaged coasters

Coasters for Spring

I made these coasters in December but intended to use them for spring. They are MDF coasters, decoupaged with a layer of clear resin on top. Other than resin, the other supplies were on sale and I intended to make the best of it. We use these regularly at home but they are hard to clean as I didn’t pour resin on the back. How long does the spray varnish hold? Any ideas?

I hope you found it interesting

Oh, I love that bracelet! The focal and the beads make for a unique combo! It is so gratifying to play with spring colors, isn’t it? Those earrings are going to brighten someone’s day πŸ™‚ It’s still cold and snowing in Bulgaria, not unusual for March but it’s taking unusually long. I like the coasters but can’t help you ideas. It’s not possible to pour resin at the back now, right?

Thank you, I cannot even imagine living with snow for months at a time. It is technically possible to pour resin on the back even now. But the coasters are slightly domed so the front will not be a flat surface and when I pour the chances of resin spilling over are very high.

What fun pieces for Spring! I love all the techniques you packed into that pair of earrings. I bet your students are having a blast learning these skills from you.

I see your concern in your reply to Rozantia about the resin spillage. I’ve never done coasters, but might you consider putting the coasters on a raised surface (a disposable cup) that sits on scrap paper inside a baking sheet (to contain the spillage) and pouring slowly. This way, the excess resin (hopefully) won’t stick to the underside of the coasters. You’ve probably already considered this, but I thought I might mention it. Good luck!!

That should actually work, thanks. I will try it.
