Living Coral earrings in Pantone colour of the year

Living coral earrings

Every year in December Pantone announces its Colour of the year and every year there is an uproar. People either love it or hate it. While I have loved previous colours like Emerald, greenery, and Ultraviolet put up with those like serenity and honeysuckle, 2019 definitely puts me in the hate list. I was really looking forward to seeing a bright yellow or blood red. Metaphorically speaking, looking at coral from a familial bonds and kinship bonds is great but to use coral as a fundamental wardrobe building colour for a whole year is beyond me.

Coral – hmmmm?

While I favour rust and even an occasional burst of bright orange in clothing and accessories, Coral has been a big no. As far as I can remember, I have owned only one piece of clothing ever in Coral (in 5th grade for a school play). The same goes for jewellery and accessories as well. But my mom loves coral. Which means that I do have real coral jewellery which I refuse to wear even now.

The only instances in the recent past where I have used Living Coral in my jewellery would be the Sugandha necklace inspired by smell and Riti necklace inspired by a smoothie. I have been forcing myself to buy Orange clothes for a few months now. So let us see how that goes in the meanwhile here are my Living Coral earrings for the challenge reveal.

We’re All Ears :: January Inspiration :: Color of the Year 2019

This month’s theme for the we’re all ears reveal is Living Coral. As you can understand from my whining above, it was a difficult one for me. However, Erin had posted some Pantone palettes on the blog of which I picked the Shimmering sunset for my earrings.

Golden glow earrings

Like always I took some creative liberty with the palette. I interpreted Radiant yellow as golden brass, amberglow as a brownish nude and hot pink as fuschia. The first pair that you see below is called Golden Glow. I made this one using the vintage brass components sent to me by Ann Schroeder. I used golden glow Czech glass beads, artisan wire and a dash of Coral enamel paint. I actually made this the day that I read the challenge post. I made the earrings in gold tone, took one look at it and realised that a bit of coral wouldn’t do it much harm.

The second pair is based on the Polymer clay components by Tammy Adams of Paisley Lizard. I started the earrings by yarn wrapping a 2 hole crystal bead in the center. Though the components are silk screened in a beautiful pattern, it was a wee bit dull for me. So in a moment of fancy I swabbed a dash of ruby resin tint on the piece. I know that it looks clunky and orangey in the picture but in reality it is a soft red with a wonderful golden glow that resin tints impart.

I have worn both earrings and they kind of work . So hopefully after this challenge I might make coral coloured jewellery to sell. What about you guys? I know that some of you favour the colour Coral and some of you don’t. Do share your views in the comments.

If you work with semi precious stones and beads, you might want to read the Gemstones in Orange post. This is a blog hop so head over to the Earrings Everyday blog and join in on the fun.

I hope you found it interesting
Cheers

I have mixed feelings over coral. It’s a color I’ve probably haven’t worn since the 80s, but as I work with art journaling more and more; I’ve found that I like the color for its mix of orange, red, and pink – adding brightness to dark pieces. And, I may write something to that effect in my blog post tomorrow, but first I have to get some pictures! HA! As for your earrings – good for you taking the plunge on a color you’re hating. I really like the slight touch of it on that first pair. The delicate swipe is feminine on a chunky and tough-feeling element. Well done.

“Adding brightness to dark pieces” that is an interesting take Hope. I have never thought about Coral in that way before. It would be really interesting to try it out sometime. Thanks for the idea

The way you have altered your components is bold and admirable! By looking at your earrings, one can’t say you have not been inspired by the mandatory color 🙂

Thank you, Miss Divya, for stepping into the challenge! It is always wonderful to see the ways you interpret it! I think that first pair is really pretty, but that second pair blew me away! I love the soft silk screen with the bold red swath on the bottom and the layered look that gives texture and interest. You could do these in all sorts of bright pop colors! Enjoy the day! Erin

I am glad that you like the wash of colour. It is an unconventional technique to try out on an artisan components so I guess the gamble paid off

It is quite interesting how strongly people react to these color announcements, and to how much color can influence us in general. I happen to like this year’s choice, but I am with you on feeling less than inspired by some year’s choices. Both of your earring designs are fabulous and I especially like how you altered my polymer clay charms to make them suite your style.

The fashion industry is governed by Colour those of us who work in it are affected whether we like it or not. I guess that is where the strong attachment or the lack of it stems from. I am glad that you actually like my alteration of your charm. I was unsure of it as it is your vision but then I felt that I had to do “something” to make coral work for me.

I would never have thought to alter them the way you did and I love the effect. 🙂

I am so happy to hear that

Wonderful earrings Divya, especially the second pair. I love bold colors and these are stunning. You make me want to wear jewelry in the color living coral.

Oh Janine, Thanks for that compliment! I never thought that I could make coral wearable

I had a difficult time figuring out exactly what color coral was. I torn between peach or red. I didn’t seem to have too many beads in that color. I am glad you figured out the color, used it really well and like it now. I do like it now that I have used it.

Both pairs are great. I found the second pair inspired. I love how you added solid color to them. They are great looking.

Even I did not know whether to lean towards pink or orange for living coral. So in the first pair I leaned more towards pink and in the second towards orange. I am off to check out your blog to see what you have done

Wonderful interpretations, Divya! I love how you added your touches to components to make them unique. I especially love the bold colors you’ve created for the second pair – they form the perfect complement to the dainty pattern at the top.

I too don’t like this year’s color much since I find it pretty difficult to work with. I’m hoping it makes me willing to go out of my comfort zone, though. 🙂

Thanks Anita, I have decided to introduce atleast snippets of orange in my work. Hopefully I will get to coral someday

Fabulous pieces! This year they have chosen the color I started to use more in my creations, so I see many beautiful things yet to be born!
